Typically, a series diode is employed for reverse-polarity protection (a). Compared to a diode, a p-channel FET exhibits significantly less voltage drop (b). If low-side switching will work, an n-channel FET can be used (c). Adding a resistor and capacitor produces a "soft-start" function (d).
